A Man and His Beer
There is something unique about exploring a new part of the world by bicycle. Being physically active in an unfamiliar environment makes for a powerful travel experience. So when we were invited to join in on a group boat-bike trip along the Danube RIver, it was impossible to say no. In addition, the group would go on explore Budapest, Dubrovnik and Montenegro--all on my "bucket list". This was a trip that was meant to happen.
After a 10 hour direct flight, we found ourselves on the train to Munich Central Train Station sitting next to a sweet and friendly flight attendant from our Lufthansa flight. She was very helpful in giving us tips for restaurants and Munich experiences and told us a bit about her life. It filled the almost hour long trip and gave us new appreciation for the life of a flight attendant.
With our bodies in a time-warp shock, we still managed to wander around the "Aldstadte" or Old Town for a few hours to give Len a taste of Munich. We made stops at Psorr Brewery restaurant for our first beer and sausage experience. Oddly, we both craved for a dinner of something familiar and non-German, so we found the Thai restaurant that Talia and I so enjoyed last year.
As I have already had the opportunity to visit Munich, the organization of time here was for Len to determine. He wanted to walk following a Rick Steve's tour (which we did) and visit some of the museums and castles. For me, I enjoyed reliving the experiences, although the desire to nap in the afternoon was too strong, so I left him on his own to explore the Residence. We met later at the famous "Haufbrauhaus" , for a very large pint and a touristy rendition of the Beer Barrel polka by the in-house "Oom-pa-pa band". We also managed to meander along some of the trails of the beautiful "Englischer Garten" Park.
But enough of Germany. We were very anxious to get to Passau to meet up with the group. Our train from Munich left on time and was surprisingly empty, and before we knew it, we found our group sitting under a large umbrella in a pedestrian-only tree-lined plaza, enjoying a beer, getting to know one another and anticipating our arrival.
